African eggplant
Native to the African continent, these eggplants come in different varieties. The thinner Ravaya Slender is the most popular variety in Uganda, while others such as the Turkish and Thai types are also produced. These are high in nutritional value and are a good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamins. They are also one of the most popular vegetables exported to especially European markets.

Aubergine eggplant
Eggplants thrive in warm weather conditions, and the tropical climate of Uganda produces some of the best aubergines in the world. There are several popular varieties grown locally, which come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and tastes. And the time taken to harvest also varies depending on the variety. Aubergines are high in nutrient value and known for their strong medicinal effects.

Avocado
Also called ova by the locals, avocado is one of the most in-demand fruits grown in Uganda. The pear-shaped hass is the most popular variety, while other types such as fuertes and reed are also widely available. Avocado plants could provide yields easily for several years for a reliable supply. They are high in monounsaturated fats and are a great source of potassium, fiber, and vitamins B-6, C, E, and K.

Butternut squash
Grown as a vine crop in local farms, the Ugandan butternut variety can grow considerably large. It has a longer shelf life compared to a normal pumpkin and has a slightly nutty and sweet flavor. It’s full of vitamins A and C, minerals, and fiber, and is also known for its antioxidant properties.

Ginger
Ginger, or entangawuzi as the locals call it, is mainly grown in the smaller landrace and the larger hybrid varieties in Uganda. This is another great produce that grows best in tropical conditions. It’s a popular spice used for cooking and is also well known for its health benefits with many healing properties to help indigestion, inflammation, and nausea. Ginger is also a good source of minerals and vitamins and is highly regarded for its antioxidant properties.

Jackfruit
Locally called fenne, jackfruit is a popularly grown crop in Uganda. This is mainly due to the country’s perfect natural elements to support its growth and the plant’s ability to provide a significant yield for many years. The Ugandan jackfruit is known for its thick, spiked, deep green-colored exterior skin, distinct sweet aroma, and the rich soft flesh. It’s high in calcium, magnesium, potassium, as well as vitamins A, B, and C.

Kabocha squash
While there are several varieties of pumpkin squash, this is one of the most popular types grown by many farmers in Uganda. It matures fast and is distinguished by its round shape and green color. Apart from the flavor-rich yellow flesh inside, it has many other uses, from its seeds to the leaves. Also, the round green variety is a popular choice for pies and soups.

Latundan banana
Locally known as ndiizi, Latundan or apple bananas are distinguished from the common types by their shape, taste, aroma, and texture. They are popularly known as a dessert banana with a short and stout shape and distinct apple-like smell, especially when young. They are also sweet and creamy when ripe and have a thick peel. This tropical fruit is available throughout the year and is full of important vitamins, fiber, and minerals.

Mango (Florigon)
Florigon is one of the tastiest small canopy mango varieties produced in Uganda. It turns golden yellow with a distinctly sweet aroma when ripe.
